For all you TJ’s shoppers, stay away from pre-made meals with grilled chicken for a while– there’s an E. coli outbreak that has so far affected consumers in California, Washington and Arizona. See Food Politics for details and label pictures.
If and when you choose to eat meat, choose carefully! Remember that the agencies responsible for food safety do not have the resources to thoroughly inspect food processing plants, and that salmonella and E. coli contaminate an enormous proportion of raw meats.
If you’re tired of worrying about whether your meals might make you sick, there are plenty of delicious, nourishing and less-risky meals to be had (like the veggie chili pictured below. Find the recipe here). Simply cut back on (or cut out) meat. You’ll be ridding your body of other additives, like hormones, preservatives and antibiotics, at the same time. It’s a win-win.
